About The Cat Codex

What this is

The Cat Codex is the reference library that sits alongside BAST: Nine Lives, a free browser platformer about a black cat drawn from Egyptian mythology. The game came first. The Codex exists because the research behind it — the breeds, the names, the myth — turned out to be worth writing down properly.

Everything here is free. There is no paywall, no account, and no advertising.

Who writes it

The Codex is written and maintained by the Cat Codex Editorial Team, a small independent group working under BuiltBySam, an independent studio run by Sam. It is not a veterinary practice and does not employ veterinarians.

We think you should know that before you read a care page, because it changes how much weight our words deserve.

How the cat care information is researched

Breed pages carry two very different kinds of content, and we keep them visually separate on purpose:

• The stat bars — Speed, Agility, Chaos, Chonk Factor, Nine-Lives Rating — are a game device. They are editorial opinion written for fun, they are not measurements, and nothing should be decided based on them.
• The care information — temperament, grooming load, typical lifespan, exercise and health notes — is compiled from published breed-registry descriptions and general feline husbandry guidance, and is written in general terms.

Typical lifespan figures are population generalisations, not predictions about your cat. Individual cats vary enormously with genetics, diet, indoor or outdoor life, and veterinary care.

What this is not

This site does not give veterinary advice. It cannot diagnose anything, it does not know your cat, and it is not a substitute for a consultation. If your cat is unwell, behaving unusually, losing weight, or in any distress, contact a veterinarian — not a website.

We do not sell cats, broker breeders, or take affiliate commission on anything.

If something here is wrong, we would rather know. Email support@bastninelives.com and say what is wrong and, if you can, what it should say instead. Corrections are made directly on the page and the last-updated date in the footer changes.
