Bastet vs Sekhmet: Two Faces of the Same Power
They are often called two halves of one idea: the cat who protects the home and the lioness who destroys its enemies. Understanding one requires the other.
The same fire, aimed differently
Sekhmet is the sun's heat as a weapon; Bastet is the sun's warmth as a blessing. Egyptian theology was comfortable holding both in one hand.
The beer that saved humanity
In the Book of the Heavenly Cow, Sekhmet's rampage is stopped when Ra floods the fields with beer dyed red like blood. She drinks, sleeps, and wakes gentled — some texts say she wakes as Bastet.
How to tell them apart in art
Sekhmet: full lioness head, sun disk, often seated with an ankh. Bastet: domestic cat head, sistrum, sometimes surrounded by kittens.
In the game
BAST: Nine Lives takes this history literally: you play the black cat of the temple, racing three Heralds to the anchor-shrines while the serpent Apep — the same chaos-serpent the great cat kills in the Book of the Dead — strains at his chains beneath the sand.
