The History of Black Cats: From Temple to Superstition
Few animals have had their reputation swung so violently by history. The black cat's story is a case study in how myths are made — and how they can be unmade.
Sacred beginnings
In Egypt, a black cat carried Bastet's protection into the home. There was no association with evil whatsoever.
The medieval turn
European folklore fused cats with witchcraft, and black cats bore the worst of it — a superstition with real and lethal consequences.
The modern cost
Shelters still report black cats waiting longest for adoption. The bias is measurable and undeserved.
Reclaiming the shadow
Black Cat Appreciation Day (August 17) exists specifically to counter this — and every black cat owner will tell you the same thing: they photograph badly and love enormously.
In the game
BAST: Nine Lives takes this history literally: you play the black cat of the temple, racing three Heralds to the anchor-shrines while the serpent Apep — the same chaos-serpent the great cat kills in the Book of the Dead — strains at his chains beneath the sand.
