The waving cat in shop windows is a coded message — and which paw is raised changes what it's asking for.
Left paw versus right
Left paw raised invites customers and people; right paw raised invites money and good fortune. Both raised: protection, though some consider it overreaching.
Color coding
Calico is the classic luck bringer; white is purity and happiness; black wards off evil; gold calls wealth; pink is for love.
The origin story
The most-told version: a feudal lord sheltered from a storm under a tree after a temple cat beckoned him inside — lightning struck the tree moments later, and he endowed the temple for life.
In the game
